Hi Sammy! Tell us a little bit about yourself

I live in Engadine, in the Sutherland Shire. A beautiful part of the world that sits between beaches and the bush. I’m married with two children and have one fur baby Diesel, who I’m proud to admit I share my brekkie and meditation time with each morning.

For fun I love spending time down the coast at our caravan. I enjoy a beautiful meal out with my husband and spending time with my family. I’m most content when I’m at home, rugged up under a blanket while enjoying a good book.

When did you start meditating and why?

I was blessed to grow up with my Mum who is quite interested in meditation herself so I can remember meditating as child, at least to my own understanding at the time, from around the age of 9. I’ve always been interested in self-reflection and spirituality, and honestly just curious about the human mind and the way it works.

Naturally, it’s a practice that ebbed and flowed throughout my life however deepened significantly when I lost my Dad unexpectedly. Meditation became my safe harbour during my grief journey and is something that still holds me each and every day through the ups and downs of life.

What does your current meditation practice look like

At a minimum, I meditate each morning for around 25-30 minutes after my journaling practice. One the weekend I like to meditate longer if I can or attend a local Yoga studio where I can be the student and not the teacher. Being a mum, my meditation practice can vary based on our schedules so I like to try and incorporate other moments of mindfulness into my day if I can, such as a 5-minute meditation in the shower of a morning.

What have been some of the benefits you have experienced from meditation?

There are so many benefits I have experienced from meditation such as greater feelings of calm and acceptance of life’s challenges as well as a deeper connection to my family and spirituality. The most significant benefit of all I would have to say is understanding myself on a deeper level and finding a greater sense of self-love and compassion.

What was the biggest challenge you have faced when meditating and what did you do to overcome it or manage it?

The biggest challenge I faced (and still do!) is finding the time to meditate. I have overcome this by scheduling “mindfulness” time into my diary like any other appointment I have in the week, as well as incorporated mindful moments into ordinary parts of my day. Such as, at mealtimes, lunch breaks or during my morning or evening routine.

Can you tell us who your favourite meditation teachers or mentors are?

I have a few. Tara Brach. I love her simple, loving and accepting approach to meditation. Janet Etty-Leal, a true role model who is so knowledgeable and passionately giving in the space of Children’s Mindfulness. As well as David Kessler (not a meditation teacher however his work in the grief space is truly powerful). I’ve recently connected with the work of Lorin Roche and am loving him also.

How have you used meditation and mindfulness in your own business?

In my own business as a meditation and mindfulness mentor, I run both children and adult classes. Mindful Minis Program and a Mid-Week Meditation Class. Women’s Lunar Circles and have just add a Mindful Minis Art Series to the studio which I’m so excited about. I also do a lot of work in the not-for-profit sector working with carers and cancer patients.

Excitingly, I have recently been voted as a finalists in the Local Business Awards. I was in the new business category with 25 businesses and have been voted by my clients and community as one of the top 3 finalists.

What do you love most about being a meditation and mindfulness mentor at ACMM?

The students! They continually inspire me with their creativity, journeys and wonderful hearts. I learn so much from them, I’m grateful that I get to support them in doing the same.

What supportive words would you say to a new meditation teacher?

Guide from your heart and everything will fall into place.

Where do we go if we want to attend one of your classes?
